Welcome to New Velocette

Welcome to New Velocette.

I started this site in order to serve as a central clearing house for all who are interested in reviving the Velocette motorcycles. I was prompted to do this when I saw that the Royal Enfield has had something of a revival. In fact, I considered buying one of the new Royal Enfields, but quickly realized that it would not have been a very satisfactory substitute for a Velocette.

Feel free to join if you are interested in bringing the Velocette back to life. Whether or not you think that you have something to contribute to the project, I am happy to have a broad base to participate in making this happen.

It is my hope that we can revive the Velocette name and begin production of a new 500cc single in the best tradition of the greatest motorcycle of all time. There have been many attempts to bring back classic motorcycles, but none have been led by community interest. This one deserves to succeed.

Thank you for joining.

I am much less familiar with the KTT, but I'd like to see a revival of the KTT as well.

I hope you will continue to visit this page. If we can generate enough interest, I have no doubt that Velocettes will be built again.

I believe that a new Velo should be a sohc bevel driven unit-construction single, with a welded frame. The overall dimensions should be the same as an original Velocette. A fishtail silencer is a must, never mind noise regulations! Bore and stroke should be 86mm square as in the post war swinging arm machines;with the modern materials and production methods at hand,a Velocette, even bevel-driven,should be an economic proposition.

Thank you very much for your post. I very much agree that the fishtail silencer is important to retain. I would also like the engine to retain the 86 mm. bore and stroke. I would like to see the engine and transmission combined into a single unit, especially if it would mean an end to the oil leaks that have been such a problem. As to the bevel-driven SOHC, I do think that would be a nice improvement. The one disadvantage of it is that it would mean that we would lose access to the variety of existing cams. I think that the frame dimensions should be retained, as well as the size and shape of the fuel tank. I'm not sure about a requirement for a welded frame though. It is my impression, though I may be incorrect about this, that a brazed lug frame can be stronger for a given weight than a welded frame. I'm pretty sure that the lightest steel bicycle frames use brazed lug construction.

Hi Tom and all you Velocette freakes :-)

Great idea to try to have a 2011, 2012 etc. Velocette produced. It has been done before, e.g. like the Norton and Triumph. Even new Vincents are made by Patrick Godet in France and JMC in England - they use drum brakes. A brand new Brough Superior (replica) has been made, so why not a Velocette.

I live in Copenhagen, Denmark - was born in 1945 and thus grew up with all the nice old motorcycles, including the Velocette. When I was 20 years of age in 1965, I bought a brand new Honda CB 72 250 cc, which at that time was a great machine. However, I ran into a British guy living in Denmark, and he owned a Velocette Thruxton - brand new - and on that particular day, I lost my heart, but never got one. I was not a mechanic, didn't have any tools, but the dream of owning a Velocette Thruxton has lived ever since. Today I own a Honda GB 500 - very tidy classic looking machine, slightly modified by myself: http://www.motopp.com/?id=103&menu=102 It looks like a classic British machine, but it's not. It's too "nice", no vibrations at all, too modern, but good to ride - it works all the time, no problems, no oil leaks. All this is OK for the daily ride, but it has NO sole - it's Japanese.

I run a small business - see my website - www.motopp.com (most of it is in Danish) - where I clean and polish motorcycles for customers, arrange for various paint jobs, arrange two yearly charity motorcycle events, my yearly motorcycle tour to my native island, Bornholn in the Baltic Sea, some special pages about motorcycles, and then my books about American airmen during WWII.

In Denmark, we don't have many Velocettes, and back in 1965, a Velocette cost approx. $ 3,000, which was almost 3 times the price of my Honda CB 72.

Back to the topic re The New Velocette. If it will ever happen, it will be a very demanding task for a lot of people. You need the necessary funds, and you need people to actually being able to - and really want to produce the machine. The New Velocette will have to meet with various regulations and customer demands, such as fuel injection, disc brakes, non-leaking engine, less vibrations, other forks, rear damper etc. etc. still trying to make The New Velocette However look like the original Velocette. Seems that KTT Services make good parts - http://www.kttservices.co.uk/Home.html - and the New Velocette must have the betl-drive-clutch (easier to operate and without oil), and electric starter will be a must have. And what about the wheels - classic ones og alu? The question is, what will potential customers actually want and buy? A New Velocette Thruxton will probably end up with a sales price of approx. $25,000 if not more.

I recently read this: http://www.sump-publishing.co.uk/velo...ruxton.htm I got in touch with the owner, Barrie James in the UK,and he did send me this picture of his beautiful machine: http://www.motopp.com/upload/GDS%20May%202009.jpg The color is British racing green !

Question: I believe that Tom is the owner of this site, but where are you situated, geographically?

Best regards
Erik (Nickname: MOTO)
