We've been spammed

It is with regret that I have changed the settings on this site to require that you sign in if you'd like to leave comments. I do hope that you will sign in and do so. There have been a large number of spam comments. I will delete all of the crap aver the next few days, then maybe we can get on with the business of organizing to build new Velocettes. I have recently acquired a new computer and that should make it easier to keep up with it.

Special thanks to Erik (MOJO) for your detailed comments. I will write more later. I encourage all of you to post comments too.

There is some interest

I see that there about a dozen people who have joined this site. That is encouraging to me. I still don't know how we can make this work, but I'm sure that with enough people contributing ideas we will find a way to make a new Velocette a reality.

Frankly, though, I had hoped that there would be more discussion about what a new Velocette would be like. I have some ideas and I will present them here. I hope that the rest of you will add your thoughts to this.

Is my memory faulty?

I have been following the Velocette Technical Forum and have been rather overwhelmed by the number and the scope of some of the problems being discussed. I remember my old Venom as a marvel of engineering, even if it did leak a bit of oil. Well, OK, it leaked a lot of oil.

I remember having a few problems with the old Velocette, but I view them as relatively easily overcome. Have I simply forgotten?

I would very much like to have a bike that handles as beautifully as the old Velo, but with the reliability of a modern automobile. Can it be done? Is there enough interest to make it happen?

I am back

It has been four weeks since I wrote to the owner of the Velocette name and I've heard nothing from him. From that, I conclude that he does not have sufficient interest in what we are doing here to comment. Therefore, I will resume activities here.

What next?

It has come to my attention that the Velocette name is owned by someone who cares very much about the brand. I have no wish to usurp the ownership of the Velocette name or the logo. Accordingly, I have changed the logo for this site, and I'm no longer using the Velocette logo that I had obtained from here. I have initiated contact with the owner via snail mail. It is my intention to allow this site to rest for a few weeks to see if I hear back from him. Before I continue with this, I would prefer that he be fully aware of what is going on here.

When I hear back from him, I will know how to proceed. It is my hope that we will then be able to continue discussions here. I would like to thank those of you who have already joined this site as well as all those who have visited. I am not yet giving up hope that new Velocette motorcycles will be built again.

There has been some discussion

I mentioned this site on http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/velocette/ and there has been some discussion. It seems that there is some interest, but little optimism. There are others who are far more interested in tinkering with old Velocettes than in buying a new one.

It was pointed out here that the Velocette name is owned by the Holder family and is not likely to be released.

Revival attempts of other classic motorcycle brands was discussed, for example here. It has never been done successfully. I believe that this is different though because it is starting from community interest.

Who am I and why am I here?

I am neither an engineer nor a businessman, but I have a great interest in Velocette motorcycles.

I have only owned one Velocette, a 1965 Venom. I was fortunate to find it advertised in the classified section of the newspaper early in 1970. I had read about Velocettes in motorcycle magazines for years and when I saw the advertisement, I called the owner immediately to arrange to see it. It was a snowy day in March and I went immediately to his home.

When I arrived, he offered to let me ride it.

Do you want a new Velocette Motorcycle?

I know I do.

No other motorcycle handles like a Velocette. A few weeks ago I discovered a shop selling new Royal Enfield 500 cc. singles and I almost bought one. It looked just about like what I remembered the old Royal Enfields looked with just one obvious difference: the disc brake in front. I quickly decided that it would have been a poor choice for what I would really like to buy, and that is a bike more like the 1965 Venom that I owned so long ago.

I realized almost immediately that if I could find a new Velocette, I would be eager to buy one. It would have to be true to best of the Velocette tradition. Excellent handling tops the list. There are many design details that I would hope would be retained in any new Velocette.

Would you like to help?

You can help get this project moving. I am not asking for a commitment from anyone at this point. For now, what we need is ideas. If you have any ideas about what we should do to begin production of Velocettes again, please add a comment to this post. Or, for that matter, if you think I'm crazy to suggest it, leave a comment. You do not have to register to comment.

All ideas are welcome.
